Tony’s has had a “hard nut to crack” in our effort to counter the abuses associated with Turkish hazelnut cultivation. Here we were, a certified “on our way to slave-free” chocolate bar without Fairtrade hazelnuts. So we traveled south, and did what made the most sense – we purchased some Dutch hazelnuts from two Limburg, family farms. Our new hazelnuts are guaranteed slave-free while grown largely without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
